MERCY SHIPS

This course is specially designed for Mercy Ship Volunteers (www.mercyships.ch).

Course aim
You’ll develop your communication skills to speak with patients, translators, nurses and doctors on the ship: general medical English for everyday care situations as well as specific medical English for certain medical fields.

Course contents
Nursing professions, hospital departments, patient admission, monitoring, symptoms, pain, medication, hygiene, anatomy etc.
Ask questions, make recommendations, make comparisons, explain care processes, give instructions, etc.

Special fields:

General surgery, Maxillofacial surgery, Plastic Reconstructive surgery, Women’s health, Ophthalmic care, Dental/ Oral health, Palliative care. We’ll focus on the diseases and treatments that are carried out on the ship.
Basics of colloquial English will be revised and deepened.

Course type
1 lesson = 50min.
3 L in the morning, weekly, 10 course days
On an additional morning the Certificate Test will take place. It’ll last about 3 L, depending on the number of participants.
Number of lessons: 11 x 3 L = 33 L
Course duration: 27 hours 30 min.

Certificate
You have the possibility to take the Certificate Test at the end of the course. If you pass it successfully, you will receive a certificate which you can enclose with future applications or include in salary negotiations. Each participant will receive a course confirmation.

Requirements
The course is suitable for you if you have been approved by Mercy Ships and therefore have the necessary English language skills for the assignment (B1).
Self-study such as learning the vocabulary is important in order to achieve the course objectives and to enjoy communicating in Medical English.
Number of participants 6 or more.

Free Language Test

The Free Language test gives me an accurate assessment of the English language level at which I can pick you up. It helps me to tailor the lessons to your needs. The test will be sent to you by e-mail after registration.

Fees for the Certificate Test and the Certificate are included.
Mercy Ships contributes 10% to the course costs.
